CAT registration deadline extended to October 4

Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) today extended the deadline for registration for Common Admission Test (CAT) 2011 to October 4. The extension has been made to accommodate students after premier institutes like the IITs and Faculty of Management Studies under Delhi University decided to join CAT 2011 for their admission, said a statement.

The registration period was earlier slated to end on September 28.CAT is already witnessing a rush from candidates to appear for the online test from October 22 following the scrapping of the joint management entrance test (JMET) of the IITs and after some more institutes decided to come under CAT.According to the statement, the deadline for sale of CAT vouchers has also been extended to October 1, 2011.There are, however, no changes in any other terms and conditions specified in the CAT 2011 advertisement published in major national newspapers on August 7, 2011 and the www.catiim.in website, the statement said.

MCI to change assessment system of new medical colleges

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to change the norms for assessment of new medical colleges in a bid to ensure more transparency. "We have decided to change our system of assessment of new medical colleges. This will bring in more transparency and accountability. This will also rectify the problem of fraudulent faculty," said Dr Purshottam Lal, Board Member of MCI.

While surveying a new medical college, he said all matters will be video recorded. "This will help us to deal with problem of duplicate faculty. "When inspecting a college we will have a videography facility in hand. Many a times it has happened that one person appears as faculty for more than one medical college. Once we have a video footage we can check if it is the same person who appears as faculty in more than one medical college," he said. All medical colleges will also have to update details about themselves in different websites.

ANITS inks MoU with JIGSAW Bio

Anil Neerukonda Institute of Technology and Sciences (ANITS) entered into a MoU with Bangalore-based JIGSAW Bio Solutions. This was announced at the valedictory function of ANIJIG-MATICS, a three-day national workshop held by the Department of Biotechnology here on Monday. The Bangalore-based company deals with applied research and consultancy in the fields of bioinformatics and bio-pharma.

As per the MoU the firm will organise guest lectures, refresher courses, workshops and seminars for the students of the college and in return ANITS will extend its services for consultancy works. The Principal of the college V.S.R.K. Prasad, Founder Director of JIGSAW Bio Solutions L. Srinivasa Rao and Swetha Kamath, Senior Research Associate of Biocon Limited, were present.

Pune students shine in beauty pageant

Two student participants from Pune won this year’s runners-up in the inter-college all India finale of National Institute of Event Management’s (NIEM) Mr & Ms University 2011 beauty pageant. The event was held on September 8 at Bhaidas Hall in Mumbai.City students, Siddharth Thakar from Symbiosis College was selected as the first runner-up and for Mr Photogenic title and Noyrika Bhatheja from Fergusson College won the second runner-up position and selected for Ms Smile.

Aakash Goswami from Nowrosjee Wadia College won the best dancer award.Goswami and Bharitya were the winners of the Pune finale of NIEM Mr & Ms University held on August 26 this year in the city, whereas Thakar was selected the first runner-up. The Mr University India, title was bagged by Ranjit Patil, a student of Mumbai University and Khushnuma Daruvalla from Podar College, Jaipur, took the Ms University India title.Centre head of NIEM Pune, Karna Upadhyay said, “The idea behind organising the inter-college Mr and Ms University is to embody the spirit of educated youth and stress on the determination to achieve.

TN govt to give free laptops to students this week

The ambitious free laptop scheme of the Tamil Nadu government, under which 68 lakh laptops are to be distributed to government-aided higher secondary school and college students, is all set to roll this week. Under the scheme, a poll promise of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa that will be launched on September 15, the government will distribute 9.12 lakh laptops this year and the balance in the next four years.

Jayalalithaa had, in her election manifesto, said that if her party comes into power, it would distribute free laptops to government schools and colleges from September 15, coinciding with former Chief Minister C N Annadurai's birth anniversary. The scheme, the first-of-its-kind in the country, would be applicable to students of government-aided higher secondary schools, arts and science colleges, engineering colleges and polytechnic colleges. While the whole project will entail a cost of Rs 10,200 crore, the government has allocated Rs 912 crore for the distribution of the 9.12 lakh laptops in the first year, a senior government official told PTI.
